Since 1982

Our Vision

Horizons Centre envisions a community enriched by adults with disabilities fully participating with valued roles and meaningful activities that promote a high quality of life.

Our History

Horizons Training Centre Society, simply known as Horizons Centre was founded in December 1982 with a bold and hopeful vision: to create a community where adults with developmental disabilities are empowered to discover their strengths, pursue their goals, and live full and meaningful lives.

Originally mandated to provide vocational training, the organization began its journey in several temporary locations while preparing a permanent home. In 1985, Horizons Centre opened its doors at 5431 36 Avenue on the south side of Wetaskiwin a place that has grown into a hub of learning, connection, and possibility.

In its early years, programming centered around sheltered workshop activities such as children’s furniture building and ceramics. But as society’s understanding of inclusion deepened, Horizons Centre embraced a new direction, one grounded in community presence, personal capability, and the belief that every individual thrives when given the opportunity to participate fully in everyday life. Programs expanded beyond the workshop and into the community, offering experiences that cultivated real skills, genuine relationships, and a sense of belonging.

Today, Horizons Centre continues to build on that foundation with unwavering commitment. We support adults with disabilities in developing employment skills, engaging in the community, and growing their independence. Guided by principles of dignity, choice, and person‑centered practice, we believe that every person has unique gifts to offer and that inclusion enriches not only the individual, but the entire community.

At Horizons Centre, we don’t just provide services, we open doors, spark confidence, nurture abilities, and walk alongside individuals as they shape lives filled with purpose, connection, and opportunity. Our work is driven by a simple yet powerful philosophy:

When individuals are supported to maximize their abilities and pursue their personal outcomes, the entire community becomes more inclusive, stronger, and enriched by their contributions.
